Synopsis
Countess Helene abandons her wedding and escapes to Monte Carlo, where a gambling loss leaves her short of money. Count Rudolph approaches her disguised as a hairdresser and gradually becomes indispensable. Attraction develops across an apparent class barrier that only one of them knows is imaginary.

Behind the scenes
Lubitsch integrates songs into movement and flirtation, notably Jeanette MacDonald's train journey. The musical Beyond the Blue Horizon accompanies her escape and helps turn travel into an expression of freedom.
