Synopsis
Two feuding village families make life difficult for a young couple who want to marry. Julia is promised to another suitor, while Romeo must find ways around the elders' hostility. Snowball battles, legal quarrels and a masquerade turn the lovers' predicament into a rural comedy, with the familiar outlines of Shakespeare's tragedy repeatedly redirected toward farce.
Cast
Inspirations
Lubitsch relocates Romeo and Juliet to a German village and gives the rival households comic variations on the Capulet and Montague names. The adaptation treats family pride and romantic desperation with deliberate irreverence.
