Synopsis
A scandal-prone diplomat returns home expecting a reprimand from his queen and instead becomes her suitor. Their marriage gives him the title of prince consort but little authority. Love becomes entangled with wounded pride as royal duties and traditional expectations about husbands and wives prove difficult to reconcile.
Ernst Lubitsch's first sound feature uses songs to develop relationships and conflict. To film alternating musical passages with contemporary equipment, the production placed an orchestra between neighbouring sets so that both scenes could be performed within the same continuous arrangement.
