Synopsis
An orphan escapes harsh treatment in the countryside and reaches London, where apparent friendship introduces him to a group of young thieves. While Fagin prepares him for criminal work, other people pursue secrets about his birth and inheritance. Oliver's search for safety becomes entangled with adults whose kindness, greed and fear determine the paths open to him.

Inspirations
Frank Lloyd's Dickens adaptation places Jackie Coogan opposite Lon Chaney as Fagin. A surviving print discovered decades later allowed the film's English intertitles to be reconstructed with help from people involved in the original production.
