Synopsis
After losing his mother, Owen grows up amid poverty and street violence, eventually becoming a gang leader. Meeting social worker Marie Deering gives him a reason to imagine another life. His attempt to change brings him into conflict with old associates and with a district attorney whose approach to the neighborhood differs sharply from Marie's.

Inspirations
The story adapts Owen Frawley Kildare's memoir My Mamie Rose and its stage version. It connects a gangster's personal transformation with the conditions of New York's Lower East Side.
Behind the scenes
Raoul Walsh filmed on location in the Lower East Side. The streets and waterfront give the drama a strong physical setting, including a dangerous fire aboard an excursion boat.
