Synopsis

A young man's demand for justice after a friend's death places him in conflict with a powerful aristocrat. Fleeing arrest, he joins travelling actors and discovers a talent for performance and rhetoric. As France approaches revolution, those abilities and his growing skill with a sword become tools for confronting the man who first drove him into hiding.

Inspirations

Rex Ingram adapts Rafael Sabatini's novel with Ramon Novarro as the fugitive turned performer. The theatrical identity of Scaramouche links the hero's changes of profession to a society in which inherited status is coming under direct challenge.
