Synopsis

After his father's death, a fashionable young man moves into the household of a wealthy but miserly uncle. He falls in love with his cousin, whose daily life is controlled by the older man's obsession with money. Their attachment exposes the deceptions through which the uncle protects his fortune and keeps his family dependent.

Inspirations

Rex Ingram adapts Honoré de Balzac's Eugénie Grandet with Rudolph Valentino and Alice Terry. The contrast between visible wealth and enforced deprivation carries the novel's concern with greed into a visually expressive domestic melodrama.
