Synopsis
A celebrated revue performer enjoys the attention of a married millionaire while his wife hires a detective to explain his absences. The affair places theatrical glamour beside the loneliness it creates elsewhere. As relationships shift, the performer must confront the same insecurity that her power over other people's attachments once seemed to keep at a distance.
Fred Niblo's film combines a stated warning about infidelity with deliberately provocative advertising and scenes of seduction. That tension between moral lesson and commercial attraction made its title and content subjects of contemporary censorship controversy.
