Synopsis

In Spanish California, Don Diego cultivates an unimpressive public manner while secretly opposing corrupt officials as the masked Zorro. His double life complicates his courtship of Lolita, who dislikes the idle gentleman but admires the daring outlaw. Swordplay, disguises and sudden escapes help him challenge an administration that treats the people as a source of personal profit.

Inspirations

Johnston McCulley's story The Curse of Capistrano introduced the masked hero. The screen adaptation helped move Douglas Fairbanks from contemporary comedies toward the costume adventures that became central to his career.
