Synopsis
On a hot evening outside a New York tenement, neighbours exchange gossip and watch one another's lives. Suspicions about an affair coexist with a young woman's efforts to escape unwanted attention. Across a single day, the shared street becomes a place of intimacy and danger.
Elmer Rice adapted his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The concentration on one building's exterior preserves a theatrical unity while allowing King Vidor to examine a community through faces, windows and shared public space.
