Synopsis
An honest admission gets a travelling salesman expelled from a dishonest troupe. Hungry and alone, he reaches a town where corrupt officials mistake him for an important inspector. Their fear turns a powerless stranger into the centre of an elaborate attempt at self-protection.
Nikolai Gogol's The Government Inspector provides the mistaken-identity structure. Danny Kaye's musical and comic performance reshapes the stage satire around a naïve outsider rather than an authoritative investigator.
