Synopsis
Jerome Kern looks back from the opening of Show Boat to the experiences behind his rise as a songwriter. Friendships, travel and stage work organise the recollection. Elaborate performances interrupt the life story to place the music itself before the audience.
The film uses the real composer as the centre of a heavily shaped musical biography. Its dramatised episodes should be distinguished from the career record, while its staged songs preserve an important Hollywood interpretation of his work.
