Synopsis
An elderly vegetable seller is arrested after a dispute with a policeman over moving his cart. The court's version of the encounter matters more than his attempt to explain it. Although prison briefly provides food and shelter, release brings the loss of customers and standing, leaving a lifetime of modest work vulnerable to the reputation created by one conviction.

Inspirations
Feyder adapts Anatole France's story of unequal justice. Parisian street life gives the social criticism a concrete setting, with the vendor's everyday working routine showing what an apparently minor official action can destroy.
