Synopsis
An Austrian officer falls for a woman he meets at the opera, then learns that she is a Russian spy. When secret plans disappear during his journey to Berlin, suspicion costs him his rank and freedom. An undercover assignment offers a chance to clear his name, but also brings him back into contact with the woman he cannot easily trust.

Inspirations
The film loosely adapts Ludwig Wolff's War in the Dark. Greta Garbo's character joins romantic attraction to uncertainty over political loyalty, placing the love story inside an espionage plot.
