Synopsis
A nightclub employee rescues an elderly man from the water without realizing that he is extremely wealthy. His anonymous efforts to reward her transform her circumstances and create awkward questions for the people closest to her. Music and romantic misunderstandings surround an act of kindness whose consequences are far larger than she expected.
Designers used hundreds of photographs of the real New York Stork Club to recreate it in Hollywood. The result supplies a recognisable nightclub setting for a story that is primarily a fantasy about sudden good fortune.
Betty Hutton introduced Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief in the film. Her recording reached the top of the Billboard charts, giving the musical a popular life beyond its theatrical screenings.
