Synopsis

In a romanticized medieval France, Louis XI gives poet François Villon a day of royal authority to rally the people against the Burgundians. Military success does not erase Villon's earlier insults to the king. His attraction to the noble Katherine and the devotion of tavern woman Huguette complicate the bargain on which his survival depends.

Inspirations

Dennis King reprises his stage role in this adaptation of Rudolf Friml's operetta. Its literary ancestry includes Justin Huntly McCarthy's If I Were King; the adventures should be understood as historical romance rather than a documentary biography of Villon.
