Synopsis
The sale of enslaved people to settle a household's debts separates families whose futures depend on their owners' decisions. A mother's attempt to save her child runs alongside Tom's transfer into increasingly dangerous circumstances. Their different paths expose the violence behind promises of kindness within a system built on human ownership.

Inspirations
Universal's adaptation returns to Harriet Beecher Stowe's antislavery novel through the conventions and racial stereotypes of 1920s melodrama. Charles Gilpin initially played Tom but left during production; James B. Lowe replaced him and the earlier scenes were reshot.
