Synopsis

A sailor on shore leave becomes fascinated by a woman who performs as a mermaid at a seaside attraction. Their growing intimacy is shadowed by the unexplained deaths of her previous lovers and her belief that she belongs to the sea. The sailor must decide whether he has encountered a legend or someone trapped inside one.

Inspirations

Curtis Harrington developed the film from his own story, with Cat People among his acknowledged influences. The title echoes Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee. Filmed in 1960 and first shown in 1961, this early Dennis Hopper leading role reached wider distribution in 1963.
