Synopsis
Peggy arrives in Hollywood expecting dramatic stardom and finds her first success in low-budget slapstick. A prestigious contract then persuades her to adopt a grander name and distance herself from the comedian who helped her begin. Her rise becomes a comic test of whether professional advancement requires forgetting both her talent and the people who recognized it.
Cast
Behind the scenes
Marion Davies plays a would-be star in a film filled with appearances by actual Hollywood personalities. Davies and director King Vidor also appear as themselves, extending the joke about the distance between performers and their screen identities.
