Synopsis

A respectable wife sends her husband to complain about the dancers who have moved across the street. He recognises an old flame, while she becomes interested in the other neighbour. A brief prison sentence provides cover for an illicit evening at a ball, turning mutual disapproval into a network of convenient lies.

Cast

Inspirations

Ernst Lubitsch draws on the French farce Le Réveillon, using exchanged visits and parallel deceptions to puncture both couples' claims to respectability. Its exuberant dance sequences place the marital comedy within the social energy of the Jazz Age.
