Synopsis
Raised to help her mother deceive men, Ziggy Brennan struggles to imagine a life beyond small-time schemes. Marriage briefly offers a new beginning, but war leaves her alone with a child and few reliable models of care. The drama follows her effort to separate inherited habits from the responsibilities of becoming a parent.
Doris Anderson's screenplay was based on a story by Adela Rogers St. Johns. Its treatment of upbringing, social judgment and motherhood places a woman's opportunities and mistakes at the centre of a postwar melodrama.
Mona Freeman received the lead after a broad search for an actress who could move beyond juvenile roles. The production also substituted a Pasadena house for a San Francisco location when the filmmakers could not find the setting they wanted there.
